Thirty Organized Labour Groups gathered at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi to participate in the 2018 National May Day Celebration.

The event is on the theme “Sustainable Development Goals and Decent Work: The Role of Social Partners.”

Amidst singing and drumming, some members of the union held placards with different inscriptions to send their messages to the Government.

Dignitaries at the event included President Nana Addo Darkwa Akufo-Addo, Vice President, Dr Alhaji Mahammudu Bawumia, Ministers of State, Members of Parliament, Religious and Traditional leaders.

Some union leaders who spoke to Citi News called on government to fulfil the promises made to Ghanaian workers.

Ashanti Regional First Vice Chairperson of the Ghana National Association of Teachers, Diana Berko, asked Government to ensure equitable distribution of resources under the Free SHS Policy.

“We all know that education is the key to development of every nation and as such if the policymakers do not make education a priority, the country will not develop, teachers are the main resources for free SHS policy and as such all the due motivations that teachers require, the government must offer them to teachers, so teachers can be committed to their jobs,” she said.

Ashanti Regional Chairperson of the Ghana Registered Nurses Association also called on Government to provide financial clearance to unemployed nurses and midwives rather than wanting to enroll them onto the Nation Builders Corps program.

“What I want to tell government is that the nurses and midwives of this country we need the support of government to do our work well, we need support in areas like provision of equipment for us to work better, our payment in terms of arrears but be paid in full, we also want government to bring back the car waivers so that nurses and midwives can buy such cars to have easy accessible mode of transportation,” he said.

President Nana Akufo-Addo launched the Nation Builders Corps programme, as it takes another step towards the fulfilment of the government’s much-touted agenda for jobs creation.

“This is a major initiative, and for those who have completed their national service. Recruitment will start on May 1 online,” the Veep said.

About 100,000 Ghanaians are to be engaged to serve in sectors such as education and health.
